A benefit of gaining insight into your energy level fluctuation is that it will enable you to discover energy drainers and eliminate them.


Log your emotional energy for one day (an example follows). Try to identify what causes your emotional energy to remain level, what causes your emotional energy to fall and what causes your emotional energy to grow. When your emotional energy is between two levels, try to identify where the strongest energy is. This log will enable you to pinpoint emotional energy drainers.

09:00-11:00 High……………… I feel in shape and confidant.
11:00-13:00 High – Middle…. I still feel relatively good but a little annoyed because of so many interruptions.
13:00-15:00 Low ……………… I feel ashamed because I failed an important exam.
15:00-17:00 Middle  …………. I slowly realized I did not pay enough attention preparing for the exam and I am confident I will pass next time. Plus I have great plans for tonight.

Most of us spend most of our time in the middle energy level. In this example, the many interruptions between 11:00-13:00, and the fact that the energy level reported is slipping could be an indication that interruptions drain your energy. This log shows us temporary emotional energy drainers. But what if instead, it revealed a persistent low energy level? That could be a true concern.

When your energy continuously runs low over longer periods of time, there are usually multiple issues and problems causing this. These feelings can be serious energy drainers.

Habits that drain your energy

There are many habits that can drain your energy. Some of these are obvious, like not getting enough sleep, but others might surprise you. For example, did you know that checking your phone constantly can sap your energy? Or that staying inside all day can make you feel drained? If you don’t eat enough healthy food, you could be feeling tired and sluggish all the time.

If you find yourself stuck in a state of low energy level you might want to consider help from others to tackle the issues that could be causing you emotional exhaustion and might be holding you back.

If you have a persistently low or middle emotional energy level, set a goal to learn more about your emotional level and then set another goal to lift yourself to a higher level. By doing so you will eliminate debilitating energy drainers and have more and better quality time with which to achieve, succeed, and excel. Being able to define the important areas of yourself, and to take control of the way your life is spent, is a potent energy booster in itself.

An energy drainer could be the little voice that says to you: I should really respond to this e-mail, or I should immediately call back the person who is on my voicemail. In Getting Things Done terms, those are the ‘open loops’.

There are many things that can drain your energy at work. One of the most common is working with difficult people. Dealing with someone who is always negative or always complaining can be very tiring. It’s important to learn how to deal with these people in a way that doesn’t wear you down.

Another thing that can sap your energy is doing work that you don’t enjoy. If you’re stuck in a job that you hate, it’s going to be very difficult to keep your energy up throughout the day. It’s essential to find a way to enjoy your work, or at least find some satisfaction in it.

Multitasking can also be very draining. When you’re constantly switching from one task to another, it’s hard to stay focused and energetic. It’s critical to take breaks and relax when you can so that you don’t get overwhelmed.

Tips to eliminate your energy drainers

The key to eliminate your energy drainers is what is called ‘front end decision making’. As soon as something appears on your radar, whether it’s a thought, an email, a commitment you make in a conversation, capture it in your system and process it at the right time. That’s two steps that you do in two different activities. The first step is collecting. That is always having a collection tool with you. It can be a simple notebook or in my case an iphone. This first step ends in my inbox.

The second step is to process the inbox regularly. While processing, you make a decision about what to do with the collection. And if you do that well, you don’t think about it anymore. If you trust yourself with these two steps, you will notice that it doesn’t cost you any more energy. In this way, you can easily eliminate your energy drainers.
