Don't know what affiliate marketing is?
In this article, I will explain to you exactly what affiliate marketing is and how affiliate marketing works.
I'll also explain how you can start affiliate marketing and how you can make money with it.
I'll give you the techniques with which many online marketers earn their money online.
What is affiliate marketing?
To put it simply, as an affiliate you receive money to promote something or someone.
This stuff to promote can involve many different kinds of things.
They can involve services such as going to the hairdresser, coaching self-confidence or a paintballing event.
If these people are creative enough, there is always a way to pay their affiliates per sale, lead, or visitor.
But what is promoted much more often (and where there is more to be earned) are digital products or services.
Think dating sites, web shops or ebooks.
Especially with ebooks, you can receive a high commission (there are hardly any costs involved with distributing them).
When and how do I get paid?
There are a lot of different kinds of ways to get paid.
Most companies/shops working with affiliates pay their affiliates by sale.
The affiliate sends a visitor with his or her unique affiliate link to the site they are promoting and as soon as the visitor buys the product or purchases the service the affiliate earns money.
In that case, you will usually receive the money deposited directly into your account.
Affiliate links activate a cookie that is stored on the visitor's computer.
This cookie is usually valid for months.
So even if the person using your affiliate links revisits the site, you sent him to and he decides to order there you just receive your commission.
How does an affiliate system work?
Nine of the ten companies that offer an affiliate system do so via an external company such as Clickbank.
Companies only need to make minor adjustments to their website to make it work.
If you are paid per sale for a product, the system works as follows in 9 out of 10 cases:
- Through a website such as Clickbank, you choose a product that you want to promote.
- You register and search for your unique affiliate link to promote a particular product.
- You make sure that people click on this link by, for example, distributing your link on sites that are relevant to this subject.
- A cookie is automatically stored on the computer of the person who clicked on your unique link.
- After the cookie has been stored (0.1sec), the person is automatically redirected to the sales page of the product you are promoting.
- If the visitor decides to buy, then the payment system recognizes the affiliate by using the cookie that the visitor who was referred to them by you.
- Clickbank pays your commission directly to you and then to the seller of the product.
That is how it works is in most cases.
You can also get paid per lead (a person who leaves his data on the site he is referred to), in which case it is the same but you, get paid more quickly.
Most companies, however, pay per sale.
Otherwise, they might run the risk of paying for spammers/con artists leaving their fake info behind.
However, most companies do check the leads to see if they are really valuable.
The companies that offer this know that a lead is worth a certain amount and by this assumption, they decide what their affiliate commission will be.
Some companies even pay per visitor, in most cases, this works the same way.
Don't think that you earn more easily by forwarding visitors.
Don't make a mistake thinking “Oh nice than I don't even have to make a sale; I just have to send a visitor to receive money.”
That you get paid by a forwarded visitor is also nice but keep in mind that the companies behind this will only do this if these visitors or leads can be converted into sales.
Companies often only look for a way to pay as little as possible for as many affiliates as possible.
In my experience as a solopreneur, you earn the most if you are paid per sale.
For example, if you sell an ebook, you will often receive a commission of 50% or more of the total amount, and a lead will earn a commission of 5%.
Besides the seven steps there are other methods by which companies see where a sale came from, sometimes they make a separate page per affiliate of which they only give out the link to their affiliate.
When they make a sale, they see that it came from that page and therefore also which affiliate was responsible for that.
Some companies also ask their customers how they found them, so if they list your name or website, you get a commission.
